Birth Control Q & A
What is birth control?
Birth control includes any method, whether medicine or device, used to prevent pregnancy. The women’s health experts at FemGYN can meet almost every contraceptive need, and if they can’t they can refer you to a specialist who can help.
What are the different types of birth control?
When it comes to birth control, you have many options. Some methods may work better than others, and the team at FemGYN will work with you if you’re not sure which one is the best choice for you.
Barrier methods prevent pregnancy by blocking the sperm from reaching your egg and include condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, and sponge.
Short-acting hormonal methods
Short-acting hormonal methods of birth control prevent pregnancy by altering your ovulation so you don’t release an egg. Birth control pills, patches, and shots are examples of short-acting hormonal options. These types of birth control must be used as prescribed to be effective.
Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC)
An IUD is an example of a LARC and prevents pregnancy by altering sperm movement to the egg. These types of birth control protect you from pregnancy for three to 10 years, depending on the type or brand. If you are interested in an IUD, please call the office to schedule an appointment to discuss IUD options.
What if I need my IUD removed?
The team at FemGYN may not be able to insert an IUD, but they can remove one quickly. To remove your IUD, your physician pulls on the IUD string, which causes the arms to fold up, and then pulls it out.
You may experience some spotting after removal, but no pain. Once the IUD is removed, you can get pregnant right away.
Why would I need my IUD removed?
There are several reasons you may need your IUD removed. For one, you may be ready to get pregnant.
However, some women need their IUD removed because they’re experiencing pain or discomfort or a heavier menstrual flow. Also, if your IUD has slipped from its position, it needs to be removed.
The women’s health experts at FemGYN want you to get the care you need when you need it, including birth control.
